This guide provides a description of our Access Services, Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Departments which details borrowing and checkout information, document delivery, reserves, etc.

GENERAL

Access Services is a term that varies from library to library, but usually incorporates several public services departments. In the BHS Library this department includes sub-departments:   *Circulation             *Document Delivery (includes Interlibrary Loan and Photocopy Services)       *Reserves 

This department is responsible for staffing the library on nights, weekends and finals hours.

USING THE COLLECTION

Borrower's Information (Circulation)

  • The Robert M. Bird Health Sciences Library, a designated resource library in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, is open to all who need to use its collections.
  • Proper identification (ID) is required to check out materials. Valid IDs are those of OUHSC students, faculty, and staff, those from other institutions of the Oklahoma Health Center, and IDs issued by the University of Oklahoma, Norman campus.

Loan periods

Monographs: two weeks                 Non-print Media: one week                  Journals: non-circulating

Renewals. Renewals may be made in person or by phone at 271- 2285 as long as no "holds" have been placed on the materials by another patron.

Courtesy Cards

  • Citizens of Oklahoma who present a current Oklahoma driver's license or OK State issued ID card are issued a courtesy card which may be used to check out up to three items.
  • Materials except reserves, non-print media, and interlibrary loan should be checked out and returned to the Circulation Desk located at the library entrance on the second floor.

Reciprocal library privileges for faculty

  • Reciprocal library borrowing privileges are available to faculty from any of these participating institutions: OU Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, OU Law Library.
  • The policies and procedures of the lending library will apply. Faculty are responsible for borrowed material until the items are returned to the lending library.
  • Faculty must provide proof of academic rank to the lending library. Identification cards must clearly state "faculty."
  • Questions regarding whether one is eligible to participate in this program should be directed to the Head of Access Services before trying to check out library materials at another library under this program.

OK SHARE Cards. Students, Faculty, and staff of OUHSC may fill out an application for the OK-Share program. This program allows those eligible to borrow up to 2 items from other participating academic institutions for two weeks at a time.

Recall. Library materials are subject to immediate recall if needed for class reserves.

Overdues. No fines are charged for overdue materials. Under a reciprocal policy extending to the University of Oklahoma, Norman campus, holds are placed on enrollment and transcripts for students who have not returned materials. Individuals with flagrant overdues will lose all library privileges.

Lost books. The borrower is responsible for paying for book replacements which is the cost of the item being replaced and a $20 processing fee.

Return of borrowed materials. All items except non-print media, rotation items and interlibrary loan books may be returned to the following book drops

  • Circulation desk -- second floor of the library building
  • Curb-side book drop -- east side of the library building

Non-print media items should be returned to the non-print media area on the third floor of the library building. Interlibrary loan materials and Rotation Books should be returned to the Service Desk on the third floor of the library building.

RESERVE COLLECTION

Reserve Collection. Reserve materials include books, reprints, and non-print media. These are usually readings required by instructors or materials needed by the reference staff to supply reference service.

  • Monographs on reserve may be checked out at the Service Desk.
  • Non-print media should be checked out at the non-print media desk.
  • All reserves are for IN LIBRARY USE ONLY.
  • An OU ID, an ID from an institution of the Oklahoma Health Center, or a valid Oklahoma driver's license must be presented in order to check out reserve items.

Electronic Reserves

  • Provide access to course readings and materials for the educational programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
  • Print or electronic materials selected by faculty for use in a specific course. Reserve materials can include books, book chapters, textbooks, journal articles necessary for course work.
  • Materials are scanned and uploaded to Bird HSC Library Course Reserve System. Access is limited to students enrolled in the course.

Requesting Course Reserves

Lost and found is located at the third floor Service Desk.

Printing

Printing is available in the library through Papercut. Students may use their personal campus Papercut logins. HSC Faculty and Staff and Public Patrons will need to register for a library Papercut account.

Typewriters are available for student use. For more information they may visit NPM.

Telefacsimile (FAX) Service

  • Available 8-5, Monday through Friday, at the 3rd floor Service Desk to send documents within the United States.
  • The charge for sending a FAX is $1.00 per page.
  • Patrons who want to receive faxed documents may notify correspondents of the library FAX number: (405) 271-3297. Materials faxed to a patron can be picked up at the 3rd floor Service Desk. 
  • There is no charge for receiving a fax.

Thesis/Dissertation Binding

Binding of personal copies of OUHSC student thesis/dissertations is $12/copy. Patrons will provide printed copies of their thesis/dissertation and payment at the 3rd floor service desk. Copies submitted for binding will be available within 6-8 weeks.
